Right before Christmas I had the chance to take my mom and Grandma to see Newsies.
Going into the show, I honestly did not know much about it. I knew that there was singing, dancing, and news boys on strike. Oh, and that it was Disney! I had never seen the movie, and I had never heard the songs.
I left the show with the biggest smile on my face. I’ve downloaded all the music and I’ve been humming the songs continuously for weeks now! It was one of the best shows that I have ever seen. I even bought a t-shirt!
In case you aren’t familiar with Newsies, here is a bit of a synopsis…
Based on Disney’s 1992 film, which is in turn based on the newsboys strike of 1899, that brought the city to a standstill, forcing the powerful papers of Hearst and Pulitzer to review their policies, this storming, energetic, adaptation is now heading out on tour.
After making its Broadway debut in 2012, the show, with book by Harvey Fierstien and Music by Alan Menken, Newsies has gone on to win 2 Tonys, including Best Score and Choreography, which was lavishly praised in the first rash of reviews, with the cartwheeling, flipping and pirouetting dance numbers declared ‘Electrifying’ by Vogue.
So, what made this show so good? Everything! From the set, to the acting, to the singing, to the dancing – everything was so on par and pure perfection. But if I REALLY had to choose just one thing that was my absolute favorite part, it has to be the amazing acrobatics of the performers.
These guys are serious athletes. The way they were flipping, jumping, and tumbling around the stage was just incredible. And then to land a series of flips and burst out to song in perfect key – so much talent!
If you have the chance to check a performance I HIGHLY suggest it! I will be looking out for the next time Newsies is in my area and will be buying tickets again.
